Opening the doors of STEM education

It’s a new day for students and teachers in Texas.

The ExxonMobil Foundation is joining forces with Khan Academy to open doors of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education throughout the state. Khan Academy will be offering free Texas standards-aligned math and science courses and teacher guides thanks to a $17 million investment from the ExxonMobil Foundation.

It’s called the Open Doors Project, and it makes a set of free learning resources available for anyone aspiring to be or teaching the next great scientist or engineer in Texas. The program includes courses for 3rd-12th grade math and science students, as well as teacher guides aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards.

The ExxonMobil Foundation has invested more than $17 million in the Open Doors Project. It will offer additional support through the Khan Academy Districts offering to primary and secondary schools in areas where we operate, including Houston, the Permian Basin and the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The Open Doors Project math and science courses and teacher guides will be available for learners in Texas and globally. The initial round of student and teacher courses will launch on June 30, 2024, with the remaining courses rolling out in the summers of 2025 and 2026.

Update (January 21, 2026)

Since the first courses launched in 2024, we released another set of resources in July 2025 and are working toward delivering the final courses in summer 2026. We’re encouraged by the early results of how the new Texas-aligned courses have supported STEM learning and teaching in Texas:

• Almost half of all 3^rd to 12^th grade Texas teachers have used first-of-their-kind teacher resources, with strong and growing engagement.
• Texas students have spent 99 million minutes on these new Texas-aligned resources so far. They make up 25% of what Khan Academy classifies as “yearly very active learners” in the U.S., who spend at least 30 minutes a week on Khan Academy.
• These new Texas-aligned student math and science resources have increased the number of STEM learners on Khan Academy by 45% and STEM learning time by 21% year-over-year, exceeding Khan Academy’s benchmarks of 8% and 5%.

We are just getting started and look forward to continuing our collaboration with Khan Academy to meet the needs of STEM learners and educators in Texas.
